The most sacred site in Burma (Myanmar today), 2,500-year-old Shwedagon Pagoda is sited atop Singuttara Hill just to the west of Kandawgyi Lake. The Theravada Buddhist shrine is said to contain sacred relics of the Buddha or of Buddhas of the past. The stupa's brick substructure is covered with solid gold plates, and the top is encrusted in diamonds. At a height of 325 feet, it is a dazzling and dominant feature of the Yangon skyline.
