During a brief stay in Yangon, the city formerly known in the West as Rangoon, we visited not only Shwedagon Pagoda but four smaller temples as well: Nga Htat Gyi, Chauk Htat Gyi, Botahtaung Pagoda, and Sule Pagoda.
The giant reclining Buddha at Chauk Htat Gyi measures over 210 feet in length. It was created in 1966, replacing a slightly smaller version built in 1907.
A view of the tropical rainstorm from one of the passageways within Botahtaung temple. Note the snakelike naga topping the outer wall: a symbolic guardian of the temple.
The standing figure is Rohani Bo Bo Gyi, a thewada or celestial guardian spirit. He is considered to be the guardian spirit of Botahtaung temple. Worshippers bring offerings to him, some of which can be seen here in the background.
