Within the park, the Shirakumo Shrine was dedicated to the goddess of music, Myo-on Benzaiten, renowned as an accomplished Japanese lute or biwa player. Originating in the 12th century, the shrine over the years was located in various other areas of Kyoto. By imperial decree, it was finally transferred to its present location in 1769.
