Eikan-do, a Buddhist temple of the Jodo sect, was founded in 863, originally as a temple of the Esoteric Buddhism of Shingon sect. It is also sometimes called "Eikan-do in Maple Leaves," the reason for which will be abundantly clear from the photos in this gallery and the one following, Eikan-do Temple, Kyoto, in Fall Color 2. Everywhere we turned during our visit to this temple we were dazzled by the incredible beauty of the vast overhead display of color seemingly set ablaze by the warm autumnal sunlight.
