The Buddhist temple Kotoku-in in Kamakura is home to the Great Buddha (Daibutsu) of Kamakura, a monumental bronze sculpture dating from the mid-13th century, which is a national icon and National Treasure. Another of Kamakura’s temples, Hasedera, is thought to have been established in the 8th century, gaining in importance in the Kamakura period (1192–1333).
