Entry to the temple is via Nakamise-dori, a roughly 270-yard-long street lined with shops selling traditional Japanese goods for souvenirs.

Senso-ji is said to have over 30 million visitors annually. Most of them seemed to be there on the day we visited.

The enormous lantern is one of three that hang above the entry at the innermost of two large entrance gates to the temple grounds.

In a side garden, this Buddha figure sits in meditation.

Visitors can light incense sticks and pray or make wishes.
