This woman makes sugar from sugar palm trees in the village of Pradak.

Juice is extracted from the male flowers, seen here.

The bottom of the male flower is cut and the juice drains into one of these bamboo receptacles. As the bamboo tubes fill up, they are emptied into larger plastic containers.

Once the juice is collected, it's boiled over an open flame until it begins to thicken.

While still in a semi-liquid state, the boiled juice is stirred and then emptied into the little bamboo ring molds seen here.

Once in the molds, the sugar cools and hardens into a solid state—quite delicious to eat! It's sold as both a confection and for use in cooking.

We were surprised to find these palm-sugar makers busily at work—right on the grounds of Angkor Wat!

At Banteay Srei this gent was hawking fresh sugar palm juice, made to order!

We stopped here to see rice noodles being made. The house is a fairly typical structure like those commonly seen in the Cambodian countryside.

The rice is first soaked until it begins to soften. This woman was adding the softened rice to the little pit, where it was being pulverized by the wooden pounder. Another person operated the pounder by foot.

Here the rice has been softened and congealed into a totally malleable form.

The rice is then put into cylindrical containers like the man is holding and is then forced out the bottom of the mold he's holding in his left hand. The bottom of the mold is perforated, and the product that emerges is in long and slender noodle form.

This little girl was selling bracelets at Ta Prohm (and looking rather bored, as well she may have been).

We were told that her father works as a guard at the temple, so she wasn't all on her own.

Outside the temple at Banteay Kdei, monster coconuts, mangoes, and pre-cut pineapple were for sale, along with a variety of clothing and other items.
