Chinese temples throughout Thailand host carnivals as part of their annual observances honoring ancestors. Performances of traditional Chinese opera are commonly a part of the festivities. They are staged by touring troupes of actors and feature highly stylized acting, with the actors donning richly elaborate and colorful costumes.
Bian lian, or face-changing, is another form of performance, derived from Sichuanese opera. In an instant, characters change the "faces" or masks they are wearing, so quickly as to be all but imperceptible to the audience.
