Rising to a height of over 5,000 feet just west of the city of Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep (Suthep Mountain) has long been considered sacred. About halfway up the mountain is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a temple with origins in the late 14th century. The present temple complex dates from the 16th century, with further expansion and restoration since then. Wat Doi Suthep has long been among the most highly revered of Thai temples, not only within the former northern kingdom of Lanna but throughout Thailand.
