Yaowarat : Bangkok's Chinatown - Jim Wageman

Bangkok's Chinatown is called Yaowarat, named after its main thoroughfare, Thanon Yaowarat, or Yaowarat Road. It has occupied the same area since the late 18th century, when Rama I moved the capital across the Chao Phraya River from Thonburi to Rattanakosin Island, now a part of Bangkok. On a typical day, the area is abuzz with vehicular and pedestrian traffic and with visitors eager to purchase items at sometimes bargain prices, some of them perhaps difficult to find elsewhere in the city.
