Loy Krathong : Chiang Mai - Jim Wageman

As mentioned in the "Loy Krathong : Isaan" gallery, the Loy Krathong festival is celebrated all over Thailand as well as in other parts of Southeast Asia to mark the end of the rainy season. It is observed on the day and night of the full moon of the 11th lunar month—usually November—as a way of honoring the spirits of all waters in gratitude for the fecundity that they bestow on the earth.

This gallery takes a look at some of the krathong as they were being created by local students on the afternoon of the festival in Chiang Mai. They are followed by pictures from the parade that took place that night and on the following night.
