Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Environs - Jim Wageman

Arashiyama, some 30 minutes by train from central Kyoto, is one of the city's westernmost districts. The name Arashiyama, "storm mountain," seemed particularly fitting on the heavily overcast day that we visited, though we were fortunate to escape without being caught in any rain. The area is a nationally designated Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty, and its famed bamboo grove is a popular destination for visitors.
